A volunteer from Forward Leeds’ 5 WAYS Football programme has spoken about the vital role football has played in his recovery after being recognised with a prestigious grassroots football award.
Kieran Scargill, 34, was presented with the West Riding County FA Grassroots Award 2026 at a ceremony held at Wakefield Trinity Rugby Ground on 4 September, recognising his commitment to helping others through sport and community engagement.
For him, football has always been much more than a game.
“Football has always been a big part of my life since I was young. It’s when I was happiest. It fizzled out due to addiction as I got older and things started to get worse as I stopped playing.”
Through 5 WAYS, football became an important part of rebuilding confidence, connections and wellbeing. As well as supporting his own recovery, he has dedicated his time to helping others get involved and enjoy the benefits of the sport.
A passionate footballer, Kieran was part of the Barnsley FC Academy until the age of 18. Keen to use his experience and knowledge to support others, he began volunteering as an Activity Coordinator at 5 WAYS.
Since then, Kieran has become a key part of the service. Alongside leading the popular Thursday football sessions and supporting the 5 WAYS Sporting Your Recovery programme, he has helped launch the Yorkshire Road to Recovery League, creating more opportunities for people in recovery to get involved in sport and build positive connections.
“Football has been a massive part of my recovery. Trying to get people involved and pushing them to better themselves has been a great experience and has helped me massively.”
The award came as a surprise, making the recognition even more meaningful.
“It was surreal. I wasn’t expecting it. It can be hard to take recognition, but I was proud.”
The 5 Ways Football programme uses sport as a way of bringing people together, improving physical and mental wellbeing, and creating supportive social connections. Sessions are open to people of all abilities, with the emphasis firmly on participation and enjoyment rather than performance.
“It is open to all abilities, there’s no expectation on anyone. It can get competitive, but it’s mainly about having fun. Improving mental health, fitness and connection is the focus.”
Congratulations to our award winning volunteer and all those involved in making 5 Ways Football such a successful and inspiring part of the 5 Ways and Forward Leeds community.
