Leeds recovery community to stage murder mystery

People in Leeds in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction are to stage a one-off production of Cluedo, written and directed by a RADA trained former TV actress.

The Hurly-Burley Players will be staging the light-hearted whodunit Cluedo at the Guiseley Theatre on Wednesday, December 4th.

The whole cast is in recovery from problematic alcohol or drug use and are members or volunteers at the 5 WAYS recovery hub on Burley Road.

Writer/Director, Christabel Grasby said: “This is the second performance I have directed with The Hurly-Burley Players. Through the drama classes the members are able to focus themselves. They are able to find a new direction or even a new self. They have found that theatre provides a great outlet for people’s emotions. Performing also offers opportunities for the students to build their self-confidence and self-esteem.”

She said: “Now we have reached the point where they will be performing Cluedo on the stage and they will feel the thrills and positive feelings when the audience can see all of their hard work.”

5 WAYS Manager Jo Byrden said: “We can’t wait to see this performance live. For some of the cast this is their first-ever public performance on a stage. ”

Jo continued: “They’ve put their addiction issues on one side. I’ve watched their confidence grow throughout rehearsals. They’ve learned to believe in themselves and put faith in each other. It’s really moving so see them at their best. We hope like last time it will be a sell out at the theatre.”

The show starts at 7pm and will finish at 7.45pm. The show will be followed by a performance of a selection of Christmas songs. There will then be an opportunity for the audience to take refreshments and meet the performers.

Tickets are available from 5 WAYS. £3 for waged and £1.50 for unwaged. You can call 5 WAYS on 0113 887 2749 or email 5ways@forwardleeds.co.uk
