Leeds Overdose Awareness Day Memorial: Overdose Affects Everyone

Forward Leeds is organising the third public memorial for those lost to drug or alcohol overdose in the city.

International Overdose Awareness Day, which falls annually on 31 August, is a global event aimed at raising awareness of overdose, reducing the stigma of drug-related death, and acknowledging the grief felt by families and friends.

Forward Leeds Harm Reduction Lead Kim Kaur said: “Overdose affects communities, families, and individuals from all walks of life. This memorial is about remembering those we’ve lost, supporting those still struggling, and reminding people that there is always hope and help available. We want as many people as possible to come along and stand with us on this important day.”

The event will run from 10.45 to 11.15 on Friday 29 August in Penny Pocket Park, offering a chance for people from across the city to come together, remember loved ones lost to overdose, and show solidarity in the face of this ongoing public health issue.

There will be opportunities to reflect on those lost, write messages of remembrance, and hear from people with lived experience. The memorial will also highlight the work being done by services in Leeds to prevent overdose deaths and support those affected by substance use.

The event is free to attend and open to everyone, including members of the public, professionals, support services, and anyone who has been personally impacted. Penny Pocket Park is in Leeds city centre opposite Leeds Minster.
