Two members of the Forward Leeds team are taking on the Great North Run, raising money to support the people they work with every day.
Nurse Gail Rennison and Recovery Coordinator Steve Stronarch are training hard for the half marathon, aiming to raise vital funds for people supported by Forward Leeds.
Gail said: “I work with people struggling to turn their lives around every day. I see how even small donations can make a big difference—whether it’s helping someone get smart clothing to attend job interviews or to fund a family activity they can’t afford.”
Steve, who has personal experience of issues with alcohol, said: “This isn’t just about crossing a finish line. It’s about showing the people we support that change is possible and that people are cheering them on every step of the way.
“I wanted to mark one year of sobriety. This seemed the perfect challenge and way to celebrate at the same time”.
The money raised will be allocated towards initiatives that directly benefit people supported by Forward Leeds, including recovery activities, wellbeing packs, and events. It’s all part of Forward Leeds’ mission to help people make and sustain positive changes in their lives.
The Great North Run, taking place on Sunday, 7 September, is the largest half-marathon in the world, attracting over 60,000 runners each year. For Gail and Steve, it’s not just about the distance, it’s about the journey.
“We know it’ll be tough, but compared to what some people go through on their recovery journey, this is nothing,” said Steve. “If we can use our feet to raise hope and funds, we’re all in.”
