Prison ‘Science of Addiction’ course reaches 500 graduates

An innovative course helping prisoners understand the biology behind addiction has reached a huge milestone with 500 graduates.

Since starting 18 months ago, the five week ‘Science of Addiction’ course has expanded to six prisons across Yorkshire and The Humber, including HMP Leeds and HMP New Hall and is now open to the general prison population.

The course outlines the biological process that sustain addiction, helping people reflect on their past with compassion and make informed choices about their future.

Forward Leeds Group Worker Lee Sandilands, who leads the course said: “I am really proud of all the men and women who have shown their commitment in completing the course.

“The course delves into the neurological side of addiction to improve understanding and relieve guilt – which can keep people in the cycle of addiction and continue harmful behaviours.

“We also discuss harm reduction and risks – such as what is in dangerous synthetic opioid substances called xylazines, nitazenes and fentanyl.

“Participants also get the opportunity to lead future sessions.”

“Through their focus and effort participants now have the knowledge to pass on to others and aid their own recovery journey.”
