An audience packed into 5 WAYS to enjoy a special Open Mic Night last Friday.
The evening of music, comedy and poetry was to celebrate three years since 5 WAYS, the hub for those in recovery from alcohol and/or drugs in Leeds, began in July 2016.
Manager of 5 WAYS Jo Byrden said: “This was easily our best Open Mic yet. So many talented performers. That included our old favorites as well as some new stars. It just goes to how much creativity the Leeds recovery community has.
“The audience was just fabulous as well. That’s what is great about 5 WAYS, the members always make it such a supportive place.”
The night began with spoken word performances from Phil Pearce and then Hank Smith. Music was provided by Mike Winder, Behla Hutchinson, Nick Davies and Mentallica among others. Comedy came courtesy of Jem Stuart.
Sarah Pearson who attended the Open Mic Night said: “It was such a lovely atmosphere at 5 WAYS, as it always is. To spend the evening watching performances by people with a shared goal of recovery was both humbling and inspiring.”
“I was so impressed by the bravery shown by every single person who stepped up to the mic – we were treated to singing, music, stand-up comedy, poetry and spoken word – all delivered with real grit and emotion.”
“The food, as always, was delicious, and we were all made to feel part of the 5 WAYS family for the evening. Thank you to everyone involved – I can’t wait for the next one.”
