July 2016 – Citalopram and Cocaine
Citalopram is one of the SSRI antidepressants and the death reported is an example of one of the reasons why we should advise people using any form of cocaine not to take antidepressants. For one thing, cocaine both causes depression and prevents an antidepressant from working, but another reason is the possibility of precipitating the very serious condition known as 'serotonin syndrome' - which is suspected to have been cause of fatal cerebral haemorrhage in the case reported.
July 2016 – Valium and Rohypnol
The illicit drug market is far from regulated so there is no telling what is in substances bought on the street. Valium is a brand name of diazepam - and benzodiazepine drug favoured by many.
Rohypnol is a brand name of flunitrazepam, another 'benzo' - but which is 10 times as potent. It is one of the 'date rape' drugs - but has also appeared in adulterated 'red' heroin. It causes sedation, respiratory suppression and profound amnesia. Especially combined with other substances it may lead to fatal overdose - but at lesser extremes can lead to bizarre/criminal/risk taking behaviour - such that users 'wake up' to face consequences of actions they have carried out but cannot remember.
